Paranormal erotic romance novella published 24 Oct 07 by Ellora’s Cave

The Blurb:

Sassy Devils, LLC is a conglomerate of good and evil headed up by the Big Guy Himself, controlling all aspects of otherworldly interaction with humankind.

Urian is a son of the Devil — literally — an incubus working for the Demon Division. His assignment brings him back into the life of human Hailey, a woman he’s fallen in love with through the sex dreams they’ve shared over the years.

Hailey isn’t sure how to deal with this recent twist in her reality. The man of her dreams is really a demon and she discovers other supernatural beings are taking advantage of the magic of Halloween. And her relationship with Urian makes her a mighty tasty target.

Their passion burning hotter than the flames of hell, it takes both of them to bring things to an explosive climax.

Read an excerpt.

In this novella, the supernatural world is actually a corporation.  The Demon division is headed up by Lucifer, the Faerie division by Tatiana, the Christmas division by Santa Claus and so forth. Various and sundry mystical and paranormal beings are employees of the different divisions, carrying out whatever jobs they are assigned in order to maintain the balance of good and evil.

Urian, an incubus and son of Lucifer, has been assigned to go undercover to find out more about a criminal group.  Unfortunately, his first assignment for the group is to terrorize a woman he has visited before as an incubus, a woman that Urian has grown to feel very strongly for over the years, Hailey.

This was a light, fast read. Sherrill Quinn is a new-to-me author, with a nice, smooth writing style. Hailey, Urian and secondary characters like Lucifer were likable. I really liked the idea of the forces of good and evil being part of a great big corporation. It’s different and I could see it having some fun possibilities.  Except…Sassy Devils? Really? A silly name that could only be found in erotic romance.

I’m assuming it’s the start of a series because there was a lot here, and some questions that went unanswered.  There’s only so much that can be packed into such a short space: world building, character development and relationship development. I sometimes end up feeling shortchanged on all accounts.  I really had a hard time believing Urian and Hailey’s HEA, despite the prior relationship between them.  I also would’ve liked to see more of Hailey and Urian.

There were some good things here, and I’m interested in seeing what Ms. Quinn can do, given more space. I don’t think I’ll have to wait long because, according to her blog, Quinn’s next EC release, To the Victor Go the Spoils, features a cyborg hero. I love Cyborgs! And the heroine’s name? Devon!! I’m so there.

Grade: C+
